The “Urban Green Plan”, a document developed and created by the Municipality of Trento, LAND Italia, and the University of Trento, has been approved.
The Green Plan is part of the main international environmental policy plans, from the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development to the European Green Deal, from the European Biodiversity Strategy to the European Law on Nature Restoration.
Designed with a co-creation perspective, the Urban Green Plan involves the entire local community to ensure a holistic and collaborative approach to the protection and enhancement of urban nature, considered as a common good. Through adaptive planning, green and blue infrastructure becomes a central pillar of a strategy aimed at countering and mitigating the effects of climate change in a resilience perspective, thanks to the fundamental contribution of nature-based solutions.
The guidelines of the Plan are illustrated in the manifesto created by LAND for a cooler Trento, with the proposal of 155 km of shaded streets and 34 km of river park; more inclusive, with the proposal to make 296 urban green areas more inclusive and rich in biodiversity; more resilient, identifying 165 areas where possible de-waterproofing interventions can be studied, 59 hectares of green mitigation areas and an agricultural park; and greener, thanks to the future redeveloped strategic areas and 3 humps reconnected with the urban fabric.
The analysis of the document is conducted by the multidisciplinary team of LAND, which identifies four different landscape areas present within the municipal territory: the urban landscape, the river landscape, the urban and peri-urban agricultural landscape and the wooded landscape.
Тhe eight objectives of the Urban Green Plan are outlined: protect the existing natural landscape heritage; improve land management; work in synergy with the city community and partners; guarantee the inclusiveness and accessibility of urban public green areas; promote adaptation to climate change; enhance greenery as a structuring element of the urban layout; increase green-blue connections and create a river park as an opportunity for territorial reconnection.
From the climatic, ecological, hydro-geological and demographic analysis, the Plan identifies the main critical issues and potential at the territorial level, from which to generate an urban regeneration program that exploits public-private synergies to promote the inclusiveness and accessibility of spaces, ensuring the conservation of ecosystems. The enhancement goes hand in hand with a management based on careful monitoring of the indicators of activity and transformation of the territory, for an intervention constantly updated over time.
