SELINA at the 2025 Transformative Change for Biodiversity Cluster Workshop

The European Commission hosted the Transformative Change for Biodiversity Cluster Workshop in Brussels, bringing together Horizon Europe projects from the Transformative Change Cluster. The goal was to share insights, identify synergies, and define priority research areas that can drive transformative change for biodiversity across Europe and beyond.

The 2025 workshop built on the foundation of the previous Cluster event held in 2023, which convened the first eleven Horizon Europe projects focused on transformative change. Two years later, the Cluster has grown in both scope and depth, reflecting the increasing urgency to develop science-based solutions to biodiversity loss and ecosystem degradation.

The workshop was designed to be interactive and forward-looking, with several core objectives: reviewing and mapping the progress and key findings of ongoing projects; identifying synergies between projects to promote collaboration and knowledge exchange; highlighting knowledge gaps in the current landscape based on the IPBES Transformative Change Assessment 2024; informing emerging policy priorities and future EU funding strategies; and fostering collaboration across projects to enhance impact and visibility.

On 3 June, SELINA was represented by Inge Liekens from Flemish Institute for Technological Research (VITO). Her participation contributed to a collaborative dialogue aimed at mapping progress, sharing emerging findings, and exploring future directions for research and innovation. Inge provided a valuable overview of SELINA’s work on identifying and analysing “Seeds of Transformative Change” — practical examples with the potential to reshape policy and practice in support of biodiversity and ecosystem sustainability.

SELINA’s active involvement continues to play a key role in shaping the path towards meaningful, systemic transformation for biodiversity across Europe. The outcomes of the workshop will strengthen future collaborations among Horizon Europe projects and contribute to the strategic alignment of research with emerging EU priorities.
