Reflecting on Three Years of Learning: Insights from the SELINA CoP Community

On 10 March 2026, SELINA Community of Practice (CoP) leads from across Europe came together for an online Learning Agenda session to exchange experiences and strengthen cross-country collaboration.

Facilitated by partners from the Flemish Institute for Technological Research (VITO) and the Foundation for Sustainable Development (FSD), the session brought together participants from countries including Italy, Croatia, Latvia, Slovenia, Bulgaria, the Netherlands, and Belgium.

Building on insights gathered from previous CoP meetings across countries, the session introduced structured tools to help CoP leads better define challenges, formulate learning questions, and capture insights over time through the Dynamic Learning Agenda.

Partners from the University of Trento (UniTrento), Croatian Forest Research Institute (CFRI),  Baltic Environmental Forum (BEF) and Research Centre of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts (ZRC SAZU) shared feedback from their CoP meetings, highlighting the challenges they encountered.

The exchanges highlighted common challenges, such as maintaining active participation, ensuring relevance for members, addressing differences between stakeholder groups, and strengthening the uptake of ecosystem services in policy and practice.

Practical approaches, including co-creation, real-life examples, and flexible engagement formats, were discussed as ways to better involve diverse stakeholders. The discussion also pointed to the need for clearer value, shared responsibility within CoPs, and greater visibility of their impact, while addressing systemic barriers such as knowledge fragmentation and limited political engagement.

The discussion highlighted the key role of SELINA’s Communities of Practice in supporting continuous learning, collaboration and the practical use of ecosystem services beyond the project.
