A new SELINA-supported scientific research was published in Nature-Based Solutions

A new peer-reviewed publication was produced with contributions supported by SELINA. The paper, titled “Exploring the potential for nature-based solutions to cool the streetscapes of a densely urbanised Mediterranean city”, was published in the journal Nature-Based Solutions.

The research is a product of a case study from Cottonera, Malta - a densely populated urban area with low natural cooling capacity due to limited green space and extensive soil sealing. The study explores how nature-based solutions can improve urban thermal comfort by strengthening existing street greening practices, such as residents placing plants in public spaces.

This research proposes practical solutions, including vegetated pergolas, elevated plant support structures, and green façades, and emphasises the importance of collaboration between communities and public authorities to support effective implementation of nature-based solutions in densely built Mediterranean cities.

The paper contributes to the growing list of outputs from the SELINA project.
