We are proud to announce that Joana Vicente from the SELINA partner Research Centre in Biodiversity and Genetic Resources (CIBIO) in Portugal is a fellow in one of the chapters of the Assessment Report on Invasive Alien Species and their Control (known as the Invasive Alien Species Report) developed by the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES).
The unveiling of the Invasive Alien Species Report will take place on 4 September 2023 at 14:00 CEST at the IPBES headquarters in Bonn, Germany and online. A link to the live stream will be available at www.ipbes.net.
Invasive alien species are among the five major drivers of biodiversity loss globally along with pollution, climate change, direct exploitation of organisms, and land- and sea-use change. One of the targets of the recently adopted Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework calls to “eliminate, minimize, reduce and or mitigate the impacts of invasive alien species on biodiversity and ecosystem services”. The IPBES Assessment Report has been developed in response to the need to support decision-makers in understanding the recent developments related to invasive alien species.
The Report has been a joint effort of 86 top international experts from 49 countries who started working on it more than four years ago. The three co-chairs that led the process are Prof. Helen Roy (UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology, United Kingdom); Prof. Aníbal Pauchard (Faculty of Forestry Sciences, University of Concepción and Institute of Ecology and Biodiversity, Chile); and Prof. Peter Stoett (University of Ontario Institute of Technology, Canada). The Report captures the diversity of existing knowledge on invasive alien species, referring to scientific articles, governmental reports, and indigenous and local knowledge.
Media accreditation for the launch of the Invasive Alien Species Report is already open. Journalists and media organisations that are not yet on the IPBES media list can receive the invitation to accredit by subscribing here.
