DP10: Integration of biodiversity and ecosystem services to develop nature-based tourism approaches and a tool that supports these approaches

Integration of biodiversity and ecosystem services to develop nature-based tourism approaches and a tool that supports these approaches
Main objective:

Develop a more comprehensive understanding of nature-based tourism in Malta to identify the nature-based experiences chosen by tourists.

Expected outcome(s):

An interactive map with places and experiences for nature-based tourism.

The aim of DP10 is to develop a digital tool for nature-based tourism through the involvement of both businesses and tourists. The nature-based tourism is considered an alternative form of tourism where a large part of the touristic experience is dependent on nature, and often also the social and cultural knowledge associated with the use of nature.

The project will integrate spatial and temporal data from different sources like satellite imagery, drones, and social media. Citizen science initiatives will also contribute, allowing users to engage in environmental stewardship and data collection, enhancing their travel experience and contributing to environmental conservation efforts. This innovative approach will provide a comprehensive, up-to-date, and dynamic understanding of Malta's natural attractions and their current conditions.
